High Roost Ranch

"Breeding to standard, striving for perfection"

Welcome to High Roost Ranch!

Thank you for stopping by our website. High Roost Ranch is located in west central Florida. We selectively breed for quality over quantity.

We are members and exhibitors of the following poultry groups: ABA, APA, Florida 4-H, Modern Game Bantam Club of America, National Call Breeders of America, the American Brahma Club, and the Rosecomb Bantam Federation. Along with poultry, I raise parrots, fantail pigeons and AKC registered Pomeranians. We also have Quarter Horses, Paints, a Thoroughbred and two miniature horses.

Updates Quick Look

  • Our Show Results page has been updated as of November 15, 2009. We had a spectacular show at the ABA/APA double show in Inverness, FL on November 14. This was our best ABA/APA show yet! Our Buff Brahmas won Champion Featherleg in both shows, for open and youth. We had some hot*hot*hot buffs that looked really good! Our Call Ducks were on too, Champion Waterfowl, Best Bantam Duck. open & youth... :)
  • Sale page has been updated, and I will be adding more birds soon.
  • Newly added to our Seramas is a black & barred project. Will post updates as I get started into this project. This will also help our black project.
  • Savannah added a white Serama hen from Maureen Broderick of GA (thanks Mo!) so she can breed whites for ABA/APA acceptance as well.
  • Brahmas from Arbuckle & Rust have been added to our bloodline. We've added bantam Dark & Light Brahmas from Jimmy, and I also added one buff pullet to our current line of buffs.
  • BLOG UPDATE 12/09/09, see what happens when you loan a bird out to a fellow SCNA member.

I always breed from show quality for show quality, but not everything hatched will be show quality. It just isn't that easy. I do occasionally have adults available throughout the year, but usually what I sell is well started youngsters that I will not be keeping back for the following breeding or show season. Birds are available at various times throughout the year. Hatching eggs are only available when my incubators are full. Please check the For Sale page for anything i may have available. I do ship via USPS Express on lives when weather permits, and on eggs they are sent USPS Priority.

High Roost Ranch is NPIP certified, tested clean for AI, Pullorum, Typhiod, and Mycoplasma gallisepticum.

My Florida certification #58-812-E.

National Certification #812

Determining Quality in a Bird

A lot of breeders offer show quality stock. We only declare them show quality if they have a proven show record, otherwise, they are from our show proven breeders. While each breeding will hopefully produce show quality offspring, we do not guarantee that this will happen. There will be culls, there will be breeder quality and then occasionally show quality.

  • Cull: a bird with a genetically inherited fault, that will likely pass this fault onto their offspring. A cull may also be what appears to be a good bird but does not reproduce good quality offspring on a decent average. A cull should never be used for breeding.
  • Breeding quality: a bird that is a good representation of their given standard, that has flaws or weaknesses that could likely be improved with selective breeding.
  • Show quality: Those that are the ideal representation of their respective standard, that I feel would be competitive in the show halls or have proven themselves to be competitive. Notice that this does not always equate to breeding quality as in the tiniest and typiest of Call ducks. We always breed for reproductive ability in all our stock, but occasionally a sterile bird of show quality will be produced. Those are always declared as such, I do not believe in hiding facts as important as this. I also will not label a young bird that is not finished growing to be of show quality, it will be declared potential show quality. An unfinished bird It is too young to make that definite declaration before they reach maturity level.
